Drawing an isochrone

With smappen, you can draw isochrones, isodistances and catchment areas very easily and free of charge. These areas represent how far you can go in a given time, or show everything within a certain distance of a given point. They are often used for market-analysis purposes, or for having a look at a delivery area.

To draw a travel-time area, or isochrone, go to the map.

When you’re looking at the map, go to the area-creation panel at the top left of the screen to draw your first isochrone:

Next, set your area’s starting point by choosing one of the following methods:
– Enter the address directly into the search bar.
– Enter GPS coordinates (latitude, longitude) into the search bar.
– Select a starting address from the map: right-click on the desired location > “Starting address.”

Select the “Travel-time area” mode by clicking on the corresponding button:

Lastly, select the mode of transportation and the travel time (maximum 12h):

To set a travel time of more than 2hrs, modify the time directly in the dedicated box.

Finish by clicking on the Calculate button. You’ve just drawn your first isochrone!

Drive-time calculation explanation

What drive times are based on:

• Speed limits on different road types (city streets, countryside roads, highways)

• Road types and their characteristics

• Transportation mode – whether you’re driving, cycling, or walking

• Smooth traffic conditions ensuring consistent and repeatable results at any time of day.

How they’re created:

Our system uses geographic information systems (GIS) to gather data from various sources including traffic information, and location data. This creates isochrones (travel-time areas) that show exactly how far you can travel within a specified time period.

This gives you accurate insights into actual customer accessibility rather than simple radius circles.
